Cedar man dies in ATV crash

Leelanau County Sheriff's deputies were sent to respond to a Centerville Township residence Saturday night.  A 911 call was received at 8:52 pm, reporting that a man was pinned underneath his All Terrain Vehicle.

Deputies arrived and were led by the victim's girlfriend to the crash scene.  52 year-old John J. Stachnik of Centerville Township was driving his ATV on a steep portion of his driveway.  The ATV left the hard packed portion of the drive and went into soft gravel.  It went into a counter-clockwise spin before rolling over, down an embankment and into a stand of pine trees.  Stachnik was thrown from the ATV and pinned beneath the vehicle.

Deputies were able to lift the ATV enough to remove the victim as Cedar Rescue arrived.  The victim was transported to Munson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.  Cause of death has not been determined yet.

The property belonged to the victim and interviews with neighbors led deputies to believe the victim crashed approximately an hour before the incident was reported.  He was not wearing a helmet and alcohol is believed to be a factor.  A blood test will be conducted to determine blood alcohol content for the state mandated Fatal Accident Report.

Elmwood Rescue was called at 2:44 pm Monday and transported the victim to Munson Medical Center.  He was pronounced dead at the hospital and is believed to have died of internal injuries as a result of the accident.  The incident was investigated by the Leelanau County Sheriff's Office.
